LATEST MILEAGE NEWS
Mileage of the Beetle and drag reducer have been significantly increased by lowering rolling resistance of the car's tires. Currently, mileage is close to 65 miles per gallon at 65 miles per hour.
This car is now about as good as it gets. Further steps available to reach even higher fuel economy are:
1. Adding an electric drive (e.g., hybrid conversion)
2. Redesign the car body for lowest drag
3. Incorporate an improved engine.
I am beginning to work on all of these. These steps are much harder than the past modifications to the Beetle. I hope to be able to report on progress later this year.

Got two more ideas for you.
1. Get some www.synlube.com lub's.
2. Make the car bi-fuel with propane www.welshtec.com
These are much easier than your other ideas.

Once upon a time a couple of guys made a turbine powered racing car
What if one used a turbine in a hybrid elctric vehicle?
I am imagining a very small turbine here - could that sort of set up work?

My neighbor has owned 2 Toyota Prius'. When the tires wore out on his first one he replaced them with conventional road tires. Hence, low air pressure compared to the original which were high pressure tires. His mileage dropped dramatically from 55mph to 42mph. High pressure tires is definitly the way to improve mileage. Bicycle riders have known this for years. The higher the pressure in the tire the less resistance where the rubber meets the road and the less energy expended by the biker. It's common sense. Now, where can I buy high pressure tires for my truck?
Thanks for your interest in finding ways to increase mileage in our vehicles.

I also might be able to boost your mileage further, but 58 mpg is impressive. I'll have to read through all your postings before I give your more information. No sense in wasting a suggestion
But, for all the pickup truck owners that read this, leave your tailgate (if the bed is empty) down or get a cover for your bed (this is better than leaving it down) and you'll increase your gas mileage. I've been able to get anywhere from 12 to 25% better gas mileage from just about every car or truck I've ever owned. Working on new stuff too.

I find it amazing that this car can get 65 miles per gallon and yet the best hybrid on the market can't do better.
Seems like we should be able to get the fuel economy to really increase with the right design.

I also think you should update your website. I'm a Beetle TDI owner in San Antonio Texas, and would love some instructions on how to make one of these wings.

Ernie,
Fantastic stuff your doing here. I just got a 98 TDI Beetle for the fuel effiency and economy. I commute about 650 miles a week to my job. I would be intereseted in how you made the wing/spoiler for your Beetle.
Also, man I hate the crap that people leave as comments. Wish Blogger could do something about it.
Thanks for the info.

You could remove your side view mirrors to reduce drag as well. I think the law allows for having one rearward view mirror, which is supplied by your rearview mirror inside your car.
